On a bright Sunday morning nearing the end of 2004, catastrophe befell the residents of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) as they were enjoying the day. Enormous earthquakes followed by tsunamis struck nearly all of the province's coastlines, with the worst destruction occurring in Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, and along the western coast of northern Sumatera. Three months later, more earthquakes subsequently hit the Nias Islands, North Sumatera Province, Simeulue and the southern part of Aceh, causing great damage and loss.
